Flipper on top!

46 boats competed in the Volvo DL Regatta 2007, a pretty good turnout. Damp weather, delays and whacky wind did not dampen the spirits too much. We are learning more about these boats and on the windier day it seemed all were smiling like fools having experienced a blast. Racing revealed some position changes, and there were plenty of sailors who could say that at some point they were leading a race…. However, with remarkable certainty Gareth Flanagan won out, apparently red hot boat speed is a really good tactic in any condition. The DL boats showed some mettle with Andrew Algeo second and Colin Galavan third. Mike Evans, HYC scored a solid fourth completing a rounded national fleet representation.

Competition in the belly of the fleet was equally fierce as were many of the mark roundings where bravery was a crucial asset. Those who kept their heads best were winners of the Gold fleet, Peter and Stephen Lee on Fun on the Run followed by Yorkshire’s Ben Williamson’s Baron 3132 and the Vaughan’s in Toucan 3298. The winner of the Silver fleet was Duff Beer 3, followed by Probably and the yet to be named 3315 from the NYC.

Congrats to all the winners, your crew’s Helly Hansen Jackets (winners) and Lifa Tops (2nds & 3rds) are on the way.

Off the water, the SB3 Class had its first class party, and most seemed to have a good time. At least there appeared to be some joint winners the following morning. Helly Hansen Prizes were presented for a range of unsuitable attributes. All good fun.

Now the fleet turns its attention to local racing and then onwards and upwards to the Northern Championships.
